Ok, this is getting really weird. Not to mention annoying.

I have now received five (count 'em, FIVE) text messages from Mystery Number A, asking me to provide them with credit for their phone. Then, just now, I received a text message from Mystery Number B, on a different network, saying that they have no credit and could I please call them?

I presume this is just a rather persistent case of mistaken phone number, though I'm not sure whether I should text them back or not. Either that or I have a stalker, albeit a rather impecunious one ("Sorry, I can't really afford to stalk you, can you loan us the price of a heavy-breathing phone call?").

I'd text back if I were you, with a "this is not who you think it is" message. Though it strikes me that, since one must presumably be able to send these "top me up" messages for free, it would be a free way of harrassing someone if you wanted to.

Yes, I was thinking that too, though I can't think of anyone who might want to harrass me. Er, apart from my annoying boss, and I think he's got his harrassment techniques sorted already.

It sounds like txt based spam. I'd delete them without responding or you'll end up with your number on some ghastly database somewhere.

Oh, yeah, that's a possibility. Maybe you could call Vodafone and tell them? They might not be able to tell you who it is, but if you explain the situation, I imagine they could tell you if it was a legitimate number or a spammer. And certainly, it is in their interest to keep spammers at bay.

Well, it hasn't happened again since yesterday, so I'm now tending more towards the "idiot student who has spent all his phone money on cheap booze" theory. If I get any more messages, though, I will be phoning the relevant companies and administering some WRATH.
