I've just heard that the Stags Head pub ([livejournal.com profile] stellanova's spiritual home, site of my 21st birthday party, and all-round fine boozer) has been sold! The new owner claims that he's not going to change it - and in fairness, he can't change a lot about it, as it's a listed building - but I fear it will go the way of many lovely old Dublin pubs and suddenly develop telly and designer drinks and a shiny clientele. Bah.

My spiritual home? Surely not!

And yes, I knew of this sad event ages ago through certain parties who manage the Parlour upstairs. The thing is, apparently it's been sold before since we've been going to it and nothing changed then, so I am hopeful. Also, the Stag's has such a loyal following (ie Trinity graduates) that if they changed anything, legally or otherwise, there'd be uproar. I don't think we need fear a telly...

Hmm, fingers crossed. In more "desecration of my youthful memories" news, apparently MCD (who own it) are planning on demolishing the SFX (site of many's the fine gig and my own personal stage debut). Is nothing sacred?

Are they going to be able to stay there, actually? You'd think one of the reasons that the new crowd bought it was because there's room for expansion both up and down (and, to be fair, I don't think I'll be all that upset if they renovate the downstairs, fine memories though I have of the place, as it is airless and smells of wee).

Oh, and apparently the new owners are the people who now own Kehoes, which hasn't completely descended into Nu Dublin Pub Hell, so that's hopeful news.

Bye bye best sausage and chips in Dublin! Or were they already things of the past?

Well, hopefully hopefully hopefully they won't make a horse's collar of it like so many other developments in our beloved capital, hem hem. I feel I am starting to turn into an Eamonn Mac Thomais type figure, reminiscing about "my Dublin". Where's my gur cake? Is my dinner poured out?

[livejournal.com profile] chillies doesn't actually like the Stags. He doesn't understand why I always want to go back there when I'm home. He thinks it's damp and dingy. But it's got a stuffed fox!

What? Not liking the Stags? What foolishness is this? In fairness, I don't know how I'd feel about it if I hadn't practically grown up there, but most non-Dublin friends I've brought there have really liked it.

I think it's more than it's not very convenient for the the Dart and it's often crowded and he's all 'there are other pubs in Dublin - why can't we go to them?'
