I must be very careful when listening to what I'm doing in choir at the moment on headphones in work, lest I inadvertently announce to any German-speakers in the room that all flesh is, indeed, as grass. Oops.

(I've also just realized that if I go over to visit [livejournal.com profile] glitzfrau and [livejournal.com profile] biascut in Berlin this Summer, I will be forced to rely almost entirely on scraps of German learned from Brahms, Mahler, etc., which is frankly a bit dramatic for everyday use. "Joy!", I will respond jubilantly to anything remotely pleasant. "Woe!", I will cry on, eg, discovering that it is my round. I can also inform people that the dead are blessed.)

Oh yeah, the choir thing in question is Brahm's Ein deutsches Requiem, NCH, this Saturday at 8pm, not sure what the ticket situation is.

[livejournal.com profile] jane_the_23rd has evilly given me Q to work on for the letters meme. Still thinking...

Heh. I now have a Brahms earworm.

I know what you mean about the German. I was the same when I first learnt Italian from opera. I knew all kinds of ways to express dismay, hatred, love and joy, but very little about how to buy a cup of coffee.

Hee! Yes, I'm envisaging a lot of pointing and gesticulation going on if I go to Germany.

(and yes, yes, I know I point and gesticulate a lot anyway...)

My friend [livejournal.com profile] athenais has the same problem. All her German-speaking friends laugh because she addresses them in formal 17th-century constructions.

all flesh is, indeed, as grass

Aha! THAT explains why that sheep tried to take a bite out of my arm!

Have you heard Grunt? All the animals sing in Latin - except for the pigs, who sing in...pig Latin.

Hee! I LOVE IT.
It's better than only knowing the Dies Irae/Libera Me. At least you've done the GErman Requiem.

Personally I'm nervous that Helen will mock me and I'm shy and don't want to speak German in front of her so I'm going to bar them from listening to me when I order food at restaurants and things. AAAAAA I'm already stressed out.

But you'll be sorted if you ever find yourself somewhere where they speak church Latin! And, er, want to talk about the End Times.

Here, when are you going Berlinwards? Should we try and CO-ORDINATE?

I'm going August 01-15 or so, but am going to Naples at some point and also thought about crashing a friend's wedding in Münich area on the fifth. I've got to get my shit together. When will YOUUUU go????

Last night I was discussing potential holiday destinations in le pub. I want to go and have a wild fling somewhere. However, this where will not be France because I can only say "j'ai douze ans" and that isn't the kind of wild fling I'm looking for.

WOE!

Really though, joy and woe should be used far more often. Silly commoners!

Hee! You have my Problem with Italian, only in German. The phrase "my heart rests so lonely in the pool" isn't terribly useful when trying to order gelato.
